Job Responsibilities

Monitor patient admissions to assure appropriate patient placement.
Focus on efficient bed utilization when assigning beds, based on patient diagnosis, special needs, physician preference and bed availability.
Conduct admission reviews per the UM plan related to level of care changes to assure hospitalization is warranted based on established criteria.
Utilize knowledge of current census information and potential inpatient bed needs to project accurate and appropriate placement of incoming patients.
Oversee the incoming calls of the One Call Center and triage and transfer those calls appropriately to facilitate patient admission.
Communicate bed placement explanations to appropriate Patient Flow and Patient Access Department staff.
Facilitate communication with respective Department Directors and managers regarding bed flow and other issues.
Facilitate appropriate referrals to care coordination.
Occasionally assist with pre-authorization of services as needed.
Utilize professional Nursing skills to evaluate incoming patient needs and assess for bed placement and appropriate care.
Act as a liaison between Doctors, offices, facilities and Mercy to facilitate the admission process.
Assist medical staff physicians with interpretation and compliance with external regulatory agencies and requirements.
Carry out hospital programs and principles of utilization review in compliance with hospital policies.
Validate medical necessity using Medicare guidelines.
Promote proactive planning and direction for care management, patient placement, and appropriate use of services.
Work closely with the House Supervisor to efficiently manage patient volumes and available resources.

Required Skills

Core Skills

Current license as a registered nurse issued by the State of Iowa
Two years clinical nursing experience
Basic understanding of computer applications
Knowledge of eligibility requirements for insurance coverage with respect to health care services

Preferred Skills

BSN or degree in healthcare related field
Experience in Patient Access, Admissions and Flow Operations
BLS certified
Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three months of hire

Requirements

Experience: Two years clinical nursing experience required.

Education: BSN or degree in healthcare related field preferred.

License & Certification:

Current license as a registered nurse issued by the State of Iowa
BLS certified by the end of the orientation period
