Job Responsibilities
- Function as part of the dialysis healthcare team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
- Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines.
- Assist in maintaining a safe and clean working environment.
- Support the organization's commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
- Assist in providing patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures and disease processes.
- Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
- Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated.
- Obtain necessary pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weight.
- Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders, and monitor patients' response.
- Document treatment parameters and report significant changes to the registered nurse.
- Conduct machine safety checks and report findings according to facility policy.
- Assist in training of applicable direct patient care staff under supervision of a nurse.
- Maintain environmental integrity by ensuring all areas are safe and clean.
- Assist with infection control audits and reinforce infection control education for patients.
- Follow all newly admitted patients through their first 4 weeks of dialysis and assist with their transitional care.
- Coordinate with staff to provide the best patient experience during the transition to the patient's modality choice.
Required Skills
Core Skills
- Knowledge of dialysis procedures and patient care
- Ability to perform vital sign measurements and documentation
- Competency in vascular access and cannulation
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to work in a team environment
Preferred Skills
- Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting
- Certification in CPR
- Ability to train others
Requirements
Experience: Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting preferred.
Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
License & Certification:
- Must meet CMS-approved state and/or national certification requirements.
