Job Responsibilities

Monitors patient admissions to assure appropriate patient placement
Focuses on efficient bed utilization when assigning beds, based on patient diagnosis and special needs
Conducts admission reviews per the UM plan related to level of care changes
Utilizes knowledge of current census information to project accurate placement of incoming patients
Oversees the incoming calls of the One Call Center and triages calls to facilitate patient admissions
Communicates bed placement explanations to appropriate Patient Flow and Patient Access staff
Facilitates communication regarding bed flow and issues with Department Directors and managers
Facilitates appropriate referrals to care coordination
Assists with pre-authorization of services as needed
Applies professional nursing skills to evaluate needs of incoming patients and disease processes
Acts as a liaison between doctors, offices, facilities, and Mercy to facilitate admissions
Assists medical staff with interpretation and compliance with regulatory agencies and payer requirements
Carries out hospital programs and principles of utilization review
Validates medical necessity using Medicare guidelines
Promotes proactive planning for care management, patient placement, and resource utilization
Works closely with the House Supervisor to manage patient volumes and resources

Required Skills

Core Skills

Current license as a registered nurse issued by the State of Iowa
Two years clinical nursing experience
Basic understanding of computer applications
Ability to manage complex clinical situations related to patient placement
Ability to work independently exercising judgment to resolve patient placement issues

Preferred Skills

BSN or degree in healthcare related field
Experience in Patient Access, Admissions and Flow Operations
Completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training
BLS certification by the end of orientation

Requirements

Experience: Two years clinical nursing experience required

Education: BSN or degree in healthcare related field preferred

License & Certification:

Current license as a registered nurse issued by the State of Iowa
BLS certification
