Job Responsibilities

  • Function as part of the dialysis healthcare team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and clean working environment.
  • Support the organization's commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
  • Assist in providing patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures and disease processes.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated.
  • Obtain necessary pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weight.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders, and monitor patients' response.
  • Document treatment parameters and report significant changes to the registered nurse.
  • Conduct machine safety checks and report findings according to facility policy.
  • Assist in training of applicable direct patient care staff under supervision of a nurse.
  • Maintain environmental integrity by ensuring all areas are safe and clean.
  • Assist with infection control audits and reinforce infection control education for patients.
  • Follow all newly admitted patients through their first 4 weeks of dialysis and assist with their transitional care.
  • Coordinate with staff to provide the best patient experience during the transition to the patient's modality choice.

Required Skills

Core Skills

  • Knowledge of dialysis procedures and patient care
  • Ability to perform vital sign measurements and documentation
  • Competency in vascular access and cannulation
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment

Preferred Skills

  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting
  • Certification in CPR
  • Ability to train others

Requirements

Experience: Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting preferred.

Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. required.

License & Certification:

  • Must meet CMS-approved state and/or national certification requirements.
