Job Responsibilities

  • Assist other health care members in providing patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures, disease processes, and access.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency and perform vascular access cannulation.
  • Administer heparin as delegated or as permitted by state law.
  • Obtain pre and post-treatment vital signs and weights and perform vascular access evaluations.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders including blood flow and dialysate flow.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide intervention as prescribed by physician order or as directed.
  • Monitor patients' response to dialysis therapy and document vital signs prior to reinfusion.
  • Discontinue dialysis treatment according to established procedures and evaluate the patient prior to termination of venous access.
  • Obtain hemostasis and apply appropriate dressings; evaluate the patient prior to discharge.
  • Calculate and enter individual patients’ dialysis machine programming for Ultrafiltration goals.
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled.
  • Document patient treatment information accurately and timely.
  • Report any significant information or changes in patient condition to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Observe patients and conduct machine safety checks according to facility policy.
  • Perform activities related to infection control audits and assist patient adherence to infection control practices.
  • Support newly admitted patients for their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate their transitional dialysis care.
  • Assist patients in understanding home dialysis products and options.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff for training of direct patient care staff.
  • Conduct environmental safety checks and maintain cleanliness of the work area.

Requirements

Experience: Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting preferred.

Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. required.

License & Certification:

  • Certification approved by state or CMS
  • Completion of the organization dialysis training program
