Job Responsibilities

  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines.
  • Assist in the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency and perform vascular access cannulation.
  • Administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law.
  • Obtain pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders.
  • Monitor patients’ response to dialysis therapy.
  • Document all relevant functions necessary for the discontinuation of treatment.
  • Apply appropriate dressings for hemostasis and evaluate the patient prior to discharge.
  • Calculate and enter patients’ dialysis machine programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal.
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled.
  • Record accurate and timely information on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet.
  • Report significant information and/or changes in patient condition to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Conduct machine safety checks according to facility policy.
  • Perform and document any intervention for unusual patient status.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens for collection.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machine surfaces and surrounding areas.
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff under the supervision of a nurse.
  • Follow all organization business policies and procedures.
  • Complete and document ongoing participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
  • Prepare initial patient chart for admission.
  • Collect, label, and prepare lab samples according to required specifications.
  • Support staff and patient adherence to infection control practices.
  • Follow infection control policies and procedures.
  • Assist new patients in their transitional care through the first 4 weeks of dialysis.

Required Skills

Core Skills

  • Patient care experience in a hospital setting or related facility.
  • Ability to operate hemodialysis machines.
  • Knowledge of dialysis treatment procedures.
  • Ability to monitor and document patient conditions.

Preferred Skills

  • Previous experience in a dialysis or healthcare setting.
  • CPR certification.
  • CMS-approved state and/or national certification.

Requirements

Experience: Preferably previous patient care experience in a hospital setting.

Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. required.

License & Certification:

  • Must meet CMS-approved state certification requirements.
  • All appropriate state licensure and training required.
