Job Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Setup and operate hemodialysis machines.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment.
  • Educate patients about adequacy measures and disease processes.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency and perform vascular access cannulation.
  • Administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law.
  • Obtain necessary pre and post treatment vital signs and weight.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders.
  • Monitor patients' response to dialysis therapy and evaluate intradialytic problems.
  • Document all relevant functions necessary for the discontinuation of treatment.
  • Obtain Hemostasis and apply appropriate dressings post treatment.
  • Conduct patient discharge evaluations.
  • Calculate and enter individual patients’ dialysis machine programming.
  • Record accurate and timely information regarding treatment onto the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet.
  • Report any significant information and/or changes in patient conditions.
  • Conduct machine safety checks and report any unusual findings.
  • Collect and label laboratory testing specimens according to specifications.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machines and surrounding areas.
  • Assist in training of applicable direct patient care staff.
  • Maintain environmental integrity and aesthetics in the workspace.
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
  • Assist in infection control audits and education of patients.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first 4 weeks of dialysis and coordinate their care.
  • Assure patient understanding of home dialysis products and treatments.

Required Skills

Core Skills

  • Patient care experience in a hospital or related facility.
  • Understanding of dialysis treatment and machine operation.
  • Ability to demonstrate safe practices and effective patient monitoring.

Preferred Skills

  • Previous experience in a dialysis setting.
  • Certification in CPR.
  • Knowledge of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) principles.

Requirements

Experience: Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting preferred.

Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. required.

License & Certification:

  • CMS-approved state and/or national certification requirements needed.
  • All appropriate state licensure and training requirements.
