Job Responsibilities

  • Direct Patient Care Technician's provision of safe and effective delivery of chronic hemodialysis therapy to patients.
  • Delegate tasks to direct patient care staff including LVN/LPNs, Patient Care Technicians, and Dialysis Assistants.
  • Assess daily patient care needs and develop appropriate patient care assignments.
  • Monitor patient care staff for appropriate techniques and adherence to facility procedures.
  • Participate in staff training and orientation of new staff as assigned.
  • Participate in all required staff meetings.
  • Ensure educational needs of patients and families regarding End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) are met.
  • Provide ongoing education to patients regarding their renal disease and dialysis therapy.
  • Discuss and record patient education related to diet, fluid, and medication compliance.
  • Provide detailed education regarding adequacy measures.
  • Ensure transplant and modality awareness is communicated to patients.
  • Provide safe and effective delivery of care to patients with ESRD.
  • Accurately implement treatment prescriptions.
  • Assess patient responses to treatment and adjust the plan as needed.
  • Communicate problems or concerns to the Team Leader or physician.
  • Initiate Initial and Annual Nursing Assessment according to FMC policies.
  • Participate in pre-evaluation, initiation, monitoring, and termination of hemodialysis therapy.
  • Take appropriate interventions for changes in patient adequacy status.
  • Ensure accurate and complete documentation by Patient Care Technician.
  • Review, transcribe, and enter physician lab orders into the Medical Information System.
  • Ensure lab requisitions and specimens are prepared and processed correctly.
  • Report alert/panic and abnormal lab results to the physician.
  • Maintain shift operation in a safe, efficient, and effective manner.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to interpret and coordinate patient care.
  • Administer prescribed medications and document medical justification when necessary.
  • Ensure a clean, safe, and sanitary environment in the dialysis facility.
