Job Responsibilities

  • Provide supervisory coverage to the nursing unit and other patient care areas.
  • Develop nursing staff through education, competency, performance evaluations, and issue resolution related to patient safety and customer service.
  • Manage personnel to ensure the availability of a competent workforce to meet patient care needs.
  • Advise the Director/Manager on hiring, retention, interviewing, and recruitment of staff.
  • Function as a staff role model by promoting cooperative problem solving and goal orientation.
  • Perform ongoing written goal setting, peer review, and performance reviews according to hospital policy.
  • Provide ongoing feedback to employees regarding job performance.
  • Coach and counsel employees under the direction of the Director/Manager.
  • Make clinical decisions regarding patient care situations based on available data.
  • Assist staff in resolving problems impacting patient care during off-shifts.
  • Collaborate with the Charge Nurse and Unit Manager as necessary.
  • Assess immediate staffing needs based on consultations with charge nurses.
  • Engage in fiscal activities to ensure timely availability of supplies and equipment for patient care.
  • Maintain effective communication with medical staff, patients, and other departments.
  • Assess patient/family satisfaction issues and take appropriate actions to resolve them.
  • Support service recovery initiatives involving patients and families.
  • Ensure adherence to standards and policies for licensure, regulation, and accreditation.
  • Assist Director/Manager in timely follow-up on incident/event reports.
  • Facilitate professional development of personnel in conjunction with the Clinical Preceptor.
  • Oversee and participate in the orientation and training of staff.
  • Direct and monitor the instruction of students and orientees.
  • Participate in outreach activities to educate and promote good community relationships.

Requirements

Experience: Two (2) years’ experience in area of practice, preferably three years in a hospital setting.

Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) within two (2) years of hire.

License & Certification:

  • Current unencumbered licensure with the WV Board of Registered Professional Nurses or appropriate state board
  • Certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire

Schedule:

  • Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40
  • Working protracted or irregular hours
