Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments, reviewing patient medical history, current health status, and surgical plan to identify potential risks and ensure patient safety.
  • Educate patients and families by providing preoperative instructions, answering questions, and ensuring patients understand the procedure and what to expect.
  • Coordinate care by preparing patients physically and emotionally for surgery, ensuring all preoperative testing, documentation, and orders are completed accurately and promptly.
  • Support surgical procedures by assisting in all phases of surgery, including sterile technique, patient positioning, instrument setup, and maintaining a sterile field.
  • Monitor patient status by continuously assessing patient vital signs, anesthesia, and overall condition during surgery, responding promptly to changes.
  • Collaborate with the surgical team to ensure seamless surgical procedures, effective communication, and the highest level of patient care.
  • Maintain safety protocols by adhering to strict safety practices, including infection control and patient identification verification.
  • Manage post-surgery recovery, overseeing patients for adverse reactions to anesthesia and safely transferring them to post-anesthesia care units (PACU).
  • Provide pain management by administering medications as needed, monitoring for side effects, and collaborating with the surgical team to adjust pain management strategies.
  • Educate patients on post-surgical care, including wound care, activity restrictions, and signs of complications.
  • Work closely with surgical teams, ensuring patient safety and optimal surgical outcomes through effective communication.
  • Ensure efficient OR flow by preparing instruments, supplies, and equipment, and coordinating with team members to minimize delays.
  • Support a culture of safety by advocating for patient safety, participating in safety huddles, and contributing to continuous improvement efforts.
  • Pursue ongoing education by participating in relevant continuing education programs, certifications, and training in perioperative nursing.
  • Act as a preceptor or mentor to new nurses and surgical staff, sharing knowledge and fostering a culture of teamwork and excellence.

  • Strong knowledge of perioperative nursing practices, surgical procedures, and sterile technique.
  • Excellent critical thinking and decision-making abilities in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other surgical staff.
  • Ability to work under pressure and respond effectively to patient emergencies during surgery.

Preferred Skills

  • Certification in Perioperative Nursing (CNOR) or equivalent specialty certification.

Requirements

Experience: Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience in a perioperative environment.

Education: Required: Associate’s Degree in Nursing. Preferred: Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program.

License & Certification:

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in GA or compact state.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
