Job Responsibilities

  • Provide anesthetic care for all types of patients and procedures in cooperation with the supervising physician.
  • Administer anesthesia to patients rendering them insensitive to pain during surgery/procedures.
  • Provide continuous vigilant observation of patients by monitoring their physical reaction to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents.
  • Inform the anesthesiologist of any adverse condition that threatens the safety or care of the patient.
  • Maintain excellence in airway management and usage of all airway adjuncts.
  • Take appropriate precautions to minimize risks of infection.
  • Participate in the pre-anesthetic evaluation of patients and selection of anesthetic agents and techniques.
  • Perform appropriate techniques of the anesthetic plan, including insertion of intravenous catheters, invasive monitoring catheters, endotracheal intubation, and arterial punctures.
  • Monitor patient's physical response to anesthetics and inform anesthesiologist of any adverse condition.
  • Manage the anesthesia process for induction, maintenance, and emergence of anesthesia cases.
  • Recognize abnormal patient responses to anesthesia and initiate corrective measures.
  • Determine the need for additional laboratory tests and provide resuscitative care as necessary.
  • Evaluate and manage the patient in the immediate post-operative period.
  • Administer IV fluids and blood products as necessary.
  • Document patient status in the anesthesia record.
  • Perform safety and performance checks on anesthesia-related equipment.
  • Procure and assemble equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Review documentation for informed consent and identify surgical site.
  • Participate in surgical pause with the entire surgical team.
  • Communicate appropriately with all individuals involved in peri-operative and post-operative care.
  • Provide anesthesia care in the absence of an anesthesiologist during emergencies.
  • Assist in the teaching and evaluation of newly-hired CRNAs, GRNAs, SRNAs, and medical students.
  • Assume responsibility for controlled substances according to departmental policy.

Required Skills

Core Skills

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse and APRN (Nurse Anesthetist) in West Virginia
  • Board Certified or Recertified by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists
  • Excellence in airway management
  • Experience with anesthesia administration techniques
  • Ability to monitor patient responses effectively
