Job Responsibilities

  • Understand the sterile technique required to establish a sterile field.
  • Demonstrate the skills of surgical scrubbing, gowning, and gloving.
  • Assist in preparing the O.R. for surgical procedures under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Open sterile supplies and identify minor equipment problems.
  • Set up rooms per procedure preference cards.
  • Work closely with co-workers to ensure availability of needed equipment, O.R. beds, and stretchers.
  • Assist with positioning of patients for procedures and holding extremities during the operative prep under supervision.
  • Maintain unit records and supplies.
  • Scrub into a surgical procedure to hold a limb, camera, or retractor placed by the surgeon.
  • Suction at the surgical site when able to see the suction tip and under the direction of the surgeon.
  • Cut suture ends at skin closure under the direction of the surgeon.
  • Assist the circulating nurse under direct supervision.
  • Hook up and troubleshoot video equipment.
  • Transport and deliver items, equipment, and medications (excluding controlled substances and IV chemotherapy drugs) throughout the facility.
  • Maintain reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies.
  • Maintain compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
  • Meet annual educational requirements.
  • Exhibit self-direction and personal accountability for work practices.
  • Perform duties in a cost-efficient manner.
  • Report for duty on time and adhere to policies concerning rest and lunch breaks.
  • Present a consistent professional image in appearance, work performance, and communication practices.
  • Interact positively with patients, families, visitors, employees, physicians, and associates.
  • Function as a member of the interdisciplinary surgical healthcare team.
  • Participate in Environments of Care activities as assigned.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of legal issues, patient rights, and compliance with standards of regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in the perioperative setting.
  • Demonstrate intra-operative handling of sterile equipment and supplies.
