Job Responsibilities

  • Provide anesthetic care for all types of patients and procedures.
  • Administer anesthesia to patients rendering them insensitive to pain during surgery/procedures.
  • Observe patients continuously by monitoring their physical reactions to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents.
  • Inform the anesthesiologist of any adverse condition that potentially threatens the patient's safety.
  • Maintain excellence in airway management and usage of airway adjuncts.
  • Take precautions to minimize risks of infection.
  • Participate in pre-anesthetic evaluation and selection of anesthetic agents and techniques.
  • Perform techniques of the anesthetic plan including insertion of intravenous catheters and monitoring catheters.
  • Conduct endotracheal intubation and extubation.
  • Perform arterial punctures for interpretation of arterial blood gases.
  • Manage the anesthesia process including induction, maintenance, and emergence of anesthesia cases.
  • Recognize abnormal patient responses to anesthesia and initiate corrective measures.
  • Determine the need for additional laboratory tests and provide resuscitative care as necessary.
  • Evaluate and manage the patient in the immediate post-operative period.
  • Administer IV fluids relative to medical history and surgical procedure.
  • Administer blood products after obtaining a hematocrit and consulting with the anesthesiologist.
  • Document patient status in the anesthesia record.
  • Perform safety and performance checks on anesthesia-related equipment.
  • Review documentation for informed consent and identify appropriate surgical site.
  • Participate in surgical pause with surgical team.
  • Communicate appropriately with individuals involved in patient care.
  • Provide anesthesia care in a life-threatening emergency in the absence of an anesthesiologist.
  • Assist with training and evaluation of newly-hired CRNAs, GRNAs, SRNAs, and medical students.
  • Assume responsibility for controlled substances according to policies and guidelines.
  • Provide anesthetics conducive to rapid turnover and high case volume.

Required Skills

Core Skills

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse and APRN in the State of West Virginia
  • Board Certified or Recertified by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists
  • Excellence in airway management and technical skills related to anesthesia
