Job Responsibilities

  • Manages comprehensive and individualized care for cardiology patients and their families in the inpatient phase of hospitalization and immediate post-discharge in the ambulatory setting.
  • Completes daily rounds; consults and/or pre-procedure/evaluations.
  • Completes integrated assessments.
  • Orders additional tests or consults as deemed appropriate with the collaboration of cardiology faculty or by following established clinical Guidelines and Protocols.
  • Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests following established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  • Consults and communicates with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings in evaluations of patients.
  • Performs succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations and documents findings in medical records.
  • Facilitates patient discharge by coordinating appropriate services and tests prior to discharge for outpatient follow-up appointments.
  • Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care for cardiology patients which includes teaching and necessary referrals.
  • Identifies unstable or complex cardiology patient care situations and facilitates appropriate intervention.
  • Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effective emergency care.
  • Evaluates cardiology patients and serves as a coordinator for follow-up, procedures, and tests in the ambulatory setting.
  • Assists in the collection of outcome measures.
  • Utilizes teaching/learning theory and appropriate strategies in the provision of education to nursing staff and patients.
  • Promotes an environment that facilitates learning by responding to patients' and families' preferences.
  • Documents the plan of care, interventions, and evaluations for every patient visit in the medical record.
  • Collaborates with leaders and staff to achieve patient outcome-based improvements in care.
  • Participates and provides leadership in committees and task forces.
  • Reviews and interprets cardiology data and recommends/implements changes as necessary.
  • Participates in clinical trials and research studies.

Required Skills

Core Skills

  • Coordination and clinical skills for the comprehensive management of cardiology patients
  • Strong communication skills
  • Proficiency with computers

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in acute care or cardiology
  • ACNP preferred for Nurse Practitioner applicants

Requirements

Experience: Preferred acute care or cardiology experience; eligible new graduates will be considered.

Education: Master’s Degree in Nursing for Nurse Practitioners; Bachelor’s Degree for Physician Assistants

License & Certification:

  • National Certification by recognized APRN Certification Centers for Nurse Practitioners
  • Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants for Physician Assistants
  • Licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia for Nurse Practitioners
  • BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
