Job Responsibilities
- Treats adult and pediatric patients, families, staff, and students with respect and dignity.
- Competent in all 3 areas of perianesthesia: Preop, Phase I, and Phase II.
- Initiate orders from physicians.
- Assist anesthesiologist/anesthesia team with GA induction.
- Assist with patient transport to/from PACU.
- Verify and implement provider orders; document in chart.
- Ensure accurate patient intake through chart review and communication.
- Monitor wellness and patient safety in PACU.
- Manage acute/episodic illness or GA complications in PACU.
- Monitor/document vital signs; ensure discharge readiness.
- Respond to emergencies in GA rooms and PACU.
- Facilitate efficient patient flow in PACU.
- Contact patients/families 24–48 hrs pre-op and post-op; document appropriately.
- Review/discuss home care instructions and document.
- Evaluate patient responses to care; consult and adjust plan.
- Integrate nursing care into the multidisciplinary plan.
- Identify and teach to learning needs of patients/families.
- Monitor and advocate for patient/family concerns.
- Identify specialized patient needs and inform staff.
- Assist with patient questionnaires on experience.
- Work with Dept. Heads to align strategies for care.
- Collaborate with other nurses to support learning.
- Assist in developing educational materials for GA/PACU.
- Assist with training and education of residents/students/allied health professionals.
- Serve as a preceptor/resource to staff and students.
- Evaluate and help implement best practices/evidence-based strategies.
- Oversee PACU inventory and day-to-day operations.
- Participate in audits and accreditation processes.
- Attend in-service classes and departmental meetings.
- Assist with protocol development and revision.
- Take responsibility for ongoing professional development.
- Receive/provide team feedback on performance.
- Complete electronic modules and learning programs.
- Adhere to attendance, float, overtime policies.
- Access UIC Dentistry Intranet/Outlook for policy/procedure updates.
- Perform other assigned duties related to safety, quality, and efficiency.
- Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Required Skills
Core Skills
- Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois
- Current AHA BLS/CPR certification
- Effective communication skills (oral and written)
- Intermediate computer skills, proficient in EHR
- Excellent attendance and interpersonal skills
Preferred Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited program
- Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois
- Current ACLS and PALS certification
- Experience in pediatric PACU and/or critical care unit (2 years within last 5 years)
Requirements
Experience: Current two years of experience (within the last five years) in pediatric PACU and/or critical care unit (preferred)
Education: Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse
License & Certification:
- Registered Professional Nurse licensure in Illinois
- Current AHA BLS/CPR and unit specific certifications
